Bing Ads to now support extended text ads as well in their user interface
Well I guess Bing felt like they had to follow in Google’s footsteps, again, and begin allowing users to expand their text ads within the Bing user interface. As mentioned in my previous article this is good news for advertisers that can now add additional content or copy that will make their ads more lucrative and hopefully help them increase their overall click through rate.
How To Leverage This Update for Your Benefit
One of the strategies that we are currently using with some of our clients is that now with this new feature we are considering making the ads a little bit more diverse and including numerous areas of service and products that we that we feel will give us the greatest chance of getting somebody to click on our ads. We think this new feature will not only help a standout but hopefully increase the click through rate on high converting ads that we currently manage and hopefully help us convert more business on how you converting pages that we’ve created within our sites. Of course all this has to be balanced out with the reality that with a higher click through rate I can also expect a higher spend but obviously we’re going to measure that up against conversions and ensure we still get a positive ROI.

Apple is now getting into the paid search business-booyah! Back in April, a report surfaced on Bloomberg that Apple was considering entering the Paid Search game for their App Store. As most of us in the industry already know, Paid Search is a huge money maker for tech companies. Am I surprised Apple hasn’t instituted something already for their App Store? No! I am not surprised because as of late they seem to be behind on just about everything else when it relates to cellphone design technology, virtual reality and that old, cumbersome, music hostage music player they call: Itunes! 🙂
Now, I think this new feature will actually benefit those hard core App developers in numerous ways. As we all know the App Store is over saturated with Apps therefore making it difficult for developers to monetize because most of the time their Apps can’t even be found! (They are buried deep somewhere in the dark, deep corridors of the App Store.) With this new feature, developers can now drive traffic and attention to their App and really expose their brand and their creation in a much simpler fashion. There is still no access to their platform, but I’ve included screen shots and pictures of what you can expect!

A very common question asked of me on a regular basis by our clients. When starting your Adwords campaign, it can be very confusing as to what match types you should use when driving traffic. Not all match types are applicable and some match types are only useful during certain phases of your campaign. If you are not familiar with Match types in Google Adwords, I’ll use the official definition by Google provided below:
“Each keyword uses a matching option to help control which searches should trigger your ad to show. You can choose one or more matching options for a keyword. If you don’t specify a particular matching option, keywords are considered as broad match.”
So in essence, each Match Type allows you to open or constrict traffic on any keyword you may be bidding on in the Adwords Google platform.
Broad match allows your ad to show for searches on similar phrases and relevant variations, including synonyms, singular and plural forms, possible misspellings, stemmings (such as floor and flooring), related searches, and other relevant variations..
• Example: kittens
• Searches that can match: kittens, kitten photos, adopt a kitten
Broad match modifier allows your ad to show for searches that include your broad match keyword or close variations of your broad match keyword.
• Example: +adopt +kitten
• Searches that can match: adopt kitten, how to adopt a kitten, best kitten to adopt
Phrase match allows your ad to show only for searches that include the exact phrase, or close variations of that exact phrase, with additional words before or after.
• Example: “adopt a kitten”
• Searches that can match: adopt a kitten, adopt a kiten, how to adopt a kitten
Exact match allows your ad to show only for searches that use that exact phrase, or close variations of that exact phrase, and no other words.
• Example: [adopt a kitten]
• Search that can match: adopt a kitten, adopt a kiten
Negative match ensures that your ad doesn’t show for any search that includes that term.
• Example: -free
• Searches that won’t match: free kitten adoption, free kitten calendars, who wants to free the kittens
Disclaimer:Understanding the role of each Match Type is extremely important and a pro understands how to use them effectively and efficiently, if your not a professional, hire one, you are better off hiring an agency like ours or someone who does this full time and helps you avoid the costly mistakes and pitfalls! If your not going to hire someone and want to go at it alone, please read on.
Rule#1: Know the Rules! Invest the Time and Energy In Understanding What You Are About to Do!
Each Match Type can either harm you or help you depending on your strategy and current phase of your campaign. It never seems to amaze me how little people know about Match Types, especially someone who has never used Adwords. The worse part is typically the user is encouraged by Google and/or the automated suggestion tool to add numerous keywords, but is never really explained how Match Types can help them, therefore they create an automatic default process for the user which typically means they will be using the Broad Match Type and typically this doesn’t help nor does it explain to the user the financial repercussions of this decision! Therefore my first tip/rule is: Know the Rules! You cant be successful if you don’t understand the rules.
In the next few articles, I will be expanding on these ideas, providing additional insight into how to strategize using Match Types!

Back in April, Google users in other countries starting seeing Green Ad labels instead of the Yellow Ad Labels on display ads, well apparently there was a reason for this! Apparently Google was testing the colored labels and I guess the Green label won over the mighty Yellow Label! 🙂 Today on Search Engine Land, they too confirmed that the Yellow label Ad is going away and the Green one is here to stay across all global SERP pages.
One Small Take Away-IMO: Google being the Search giant that they are must have tested this for long periods of time across their immense search network, A/B testing at its finest and at the highest level! If they decided to go with Green, it could possibly indicate that the Green color they were using converted better or did better across the board. Maybe it also signaled the Green ad labels were easier to read. None the less, something we can take, potentially use in our campaign strategies and landing pages where it relates to advertisers, banners or creative(s) we might be using on landing pages.

If you are currently driving traffic using Bing Ads, you can now make edits and adjustments via their App!
They recently mentioned this feature on blog: Here!
Obviously this should make life easier for marketers! I always wondered why this wasn’t an option and when it would even become an option instead of logging in directly and addressing these issues some other way, but I guess Bing got it and decided to add this option as a way to keep enhancing accessibility.

A Blomberg Story broke the news that Google was beginning to use RankBrain in almost all their Search Queries.
What in the World Is RankBrain?
RankBrain is Google’s new name for a machine-learning artificial intelligence system that is used to help process its search results on the SERPS! This was confirmed by Google, Blomberg and Search Engine Land. Its official, they are now using some form of AI in their Ranking Process!
What in the World Is Machine Learn?
Basically machine learning allows the system itself to learn how to do something, rather than being taught by humans or following some kind of detailed programming or command. Sound scary? It should! This is where the top digital disruptor are headed!
What Is The Difference Between AI & Machine Learning?
AI differs from machine learning, in terms of RankBrain is that they are used interchangeably when being described.
So is RankBrain the New Method Google Will Rank Search Results?
From what I understand the answer is No! RankBrain will only be part of their overall search “algorithm,” a computer program that’s used to sort through the billions of pages for particular search queries.

How long is a long time? Well it all depends on whether or not you are Mac or Windows user, especially if you manage paid ad campaigns on Bing. After years and years and years of waiting, Mac users will now have the option of getting the Bing Ads Editor with all the features of the PC version on their Mac.
From what I understand from others in the industry, the Bing editor for Mac users has long been the most highly requested feature on the Bing Ads user forum. I also here the beta version will be available in the US at SMX Advanced in Seattle on Wednesday. If you’d like to check out more information, head over to the Bing’s support link regarding this new feature and get caught up on all the goodies and updates they plan on releasing with this new tool!

It’s a fact that society as a whole is being programmed and has been conditioned to transact and do most of their transactions online via the web! Retailers that I consult over the last several years have had to migrate their brick and mortar business online in order to be competitive and ensure that they can sell their products in a more convenient matter. However what I do find most interesting is that because there’s so many options and many of the options that are out there are technical in nature, the business owners have a hard time understanding what route to take when it comes to building their e-commerce site online.
One of the things that I’ve decided to do in today’s Blog post is to begin the conversation regarding how to appropriately build an e-commerce enabled site so you can successfully sell your products and services online using a shopping cart.
One of the most fundamental principles that I teach and consult my clients on relates to how they should go about starting their e-commerce endeavors online. If you are a retailer or brick-and-mortar merchant and have never sold via an e-commerce site online I think this blog post and many of the other articles that I’m going to begin posting are going to be extremely helpful because even though a lot of the fundamental principles of traditional sales our embedded with an e-commerce site there are a lot of other principles that are completely opposite and different in the traditional sense.
Suggestion #1
The first principle that I like to point out to a merchant or a new brick-and-mortar retailer is that you’re going to have to hire expertise to get your e-commerce site up and running. You cannot take a shortcut on this, you cannot take the time to learn it all on your own, it is going to cost you an exorbitant amount of time and money to be able to do it on your own, but what you can do is hire a professional to help you build the site, get a shopping cart integrated and learn from the process because if you’re not technical or tech savvy, you’re going to need a guide.
Suggestion #2
The second thing you’re going to need is for that person you’re hiring to go over with you all the different options that you have for building your e-commerce website. There are many pros and cons to developing it from scratch versus buying an out-of-the-box e-commerce solution or even using a hosted solution like many of the companies that are out there on the web. Regardless of what option you decide to take you need to keep in mind what the long-term goal is of your e-commerce endeavors. If you’re a serious merchant with tons of inventory and you already successful on the retail market you’re going to need to expense and invest time and money to properly position yourself online and compete against your competitors. If you’re a fairly small to medium size merchant and you have some inventory and you’d like to sell that inventory online you’re going to in the very least have to make some kind of commitment and investment into the project in order to do it right the first time. There are plenty of small size retailers that started off with a very basic model online but did all the right things in order to be able to grow and scale their business.
Suggestion #3
The last thing I’ll mention on this particular Blog post regarding this topic is that as a retailer or brick-and-mortar merchant you’re going to have to change your mindset as to how this all works online. One of the biggest hurdles and obstacles that most of my clients have to overcome is the fact that they are used to speaking to people face-to-face, talking to people face-to-face, selling their product face-to-face and don’t really understand how someone can virtually buy something on their online store without ever having talk to or be convinced by someone to buy a product. The reality is people who buy online look for certain things and certain indicators to confirm whether or not who they want to buy from is worthy of the purchase and whether or not they can trust them in the transaction for the item and product that they need to buy. Another big factor has to do with pricing because of the fact that someone can open up another tab on their browser and compare pricing that also makes the work a little more difficult it’s not like when you’re any physical store and don’t want to drive across town to save yourself a few bucks on an item you want to purchase, when you’re buying online the dynamics and the competition are very different however that is not to say that you have to drop your pants and not make any margin on the products that you sell in order to be competitive. A good example of someone who has been successful selling higher than normal priced items on their site but has used customer service as their unique value proposition is a company like Zappos the shoe store. If you visits Zappos and you want to buy a product you’ll notice that they aren’t the cheapest or the most inexpensive option in the market however what they do offer is a tremendous amount of credibility and customer service to their buyers and they have created a culture around their business which is extremely important if you plan on being successful long-term i.e. the reason why you want to make sure that whatever structure you put in place is first done within the scope of a solid strategy for your online business.
