Google’s published guidance is explicit that structured data is not required for AI features, that there is no special markup to add, and that content does not need to be broken into small pieces for AI systems to understand it. It also says you don’t need llms.txt files or AI-specific rewrites of your copy.
We recommend schema anyway, and we’ll tell you exactly why: it earns rich-result eligibility in classic search, it removes ambiguity about your business details, and third-party studies associate marked-up pages with higher citation rates - though Google has not confirmed a causal link. That’s a reason to implement it. It is not a requirement, and any agency selling it as one either hasn’t read the documentation or is counting on you not having read it.
This distinction runs through how we work. Where Google has published guidance, we follow it and link to it. Where the evidence is third-party, we say so.
GEO does not replace SEO. AI engines still draw on crawled and indexed pages, so indexation, site speed, and internal linking matter as much as they always did. The difference is what sits on top: a page can rank well and still never be quoted, because ranking is decided at the page level while citation is decided at the passage level.

Until recently, being cited in an AI answer mostly followed from ranking well. That link has weakened sharply.
Ahrefs analysed 863,000 keywords and 4 million AI Overview URLs in April 2026 and found that only 38% of cited pages ranked in the top 10 organic results for the same query - down from 76% in their July 2025 study. The remaining citations split almost evenly between positions 11–100 and pages ranking outside the top 100 entirely.
Ranking and citation have become separate outcomes. A page can sit outside the first ten results and still be the passage an AI engine quotes.

We cannot tell you the date an AI engine will first cite you, and no one can. The selection process happens inside Google’s systems: a page must be crawled and indexed, then chosen as the passage that best answers a specific question. Google does not publish exactly how or when that selection is made.
Any agency promising a specific first-citation date is therefore guessing.
The pattern in published research points to a maintained asset rather than either a quick win or a slow burn.
Seer Interactive analysed 7,683 pages and 47,097 citations across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity between March and June 2026. It found that 75% of cited pages had been updated within the previous year, and 88% within two. Among pages cited consistently across all four months of the study, the median time since last update was about 5.6 months.
The more useful finding is underneath that. Only 42% of the pages that looked fresh by update date had actually been published within the last year. The pages AI engines cite most reliably are established pages that are actively maintained - not new pages, and not old pages left alone.
That shapes how we work. Publishing a page is the start of its life as a citable asset, not the end of it. We revisit published pages on a quarterly cycle and revise them where the underlying facts, platform behaviour or competitive answers have moved.
To be clear about what that does not mean: we don’t change dates on pages that haven’t changed. Google names that specifically as a low-quality signal, and an engine comparing a bumped date against unchanged content is the fastest way to lose the trust the page was built to earn.
